Cooking in The War Within!
With the release of the new expansion, The War Within, and a fresh set of professions, today’s spotlight is on Khaz Algar Cooking. I believe the Cooking profession is profitable and easily accessible to everyone. With my advice in this post, you can tap into this potential for profit and make your mark in the game!
Continue reading to see what Khaz Algar Cooking offers and how you can make it profitable!
Understanding Supply and Demand:
As a new expansion/patch hits the game, many new materials/crafts become available. This demand for materials is a golden opportunity for gathering professions but a stumbling block for players aiming to level their crafting professions quickly and gain a competitive edge in the market. Understanding the supply and demand dynamics is crucial in this scenario.
Ultimately, the first few days will see obscene values for crafting materials until the supply outweighs the demand. Only then will material values start to normalize. Ideally, this is a great time to gather materials and profit from the high demand.
Using the Auction House:
The Auction House within Dornogal is found at the coordinates [56.6,46.6]. Here, you’ll be searching for materials that will assist in crafting. There have been some improvements in the search function, none more so than the filter option to include Current Expansion Only. Selecting this will only return search results for items for The War Within.
Using this feature removes many of the search results that are of no interest to you, ultimately decluttering the page and increasing the visual aspect of the items you want.
Work Orders:
Work Orders is a great addition that came in Dragonflight and gave players an alternative option to acquire items (mainly Bind on Pickup) that they couldn’t craft or gain from the Auction House. By providing the crafter with the required materials and a commission, they can craft the item for you.
Many alts with a vast range of different professions/specializations can cover most of my demand for specific crafts. With specialization points at a premium at the beginning of the expansion, there’s merit in having multiple alts with the same profession but differing specializations.
The best Gold-Makers in Dragonflight used this method, and if you have aspirations of making millions of gold in The War Within, I’d suggest following them!

Learning to Cook:
Once you’ve unlocked the new Capital City, Dornogal, your first stop should be the Cooking trainer Athodas, located at [44.2,45.6]. Here, you can learn Khaz Algar Cooking and gain access to their recipes.
It’s worth highlighting that Cooking doesn’t have a specialization, and if you’re at the appropriate Cooking skill level, you can learn any cooking recipe available to you.

Understanding Profession Skill Ups:
When you learn a new recipe, it’s essential to understand whether crafting this new recipe will reward a skill up. The chevron(s) on the left-hand side of the recipe displays the chance of a skill up. The greater the chevrons, the greater the chance of earning a skill up, as detailed below.
- Three Chevrons – Guaranteed chance of gaining a skill up.
- Two Chevrons – A high chance of gaining a skill up.
- One Chevron – A low chance of gaining a skill up.
- No Chevrons (Greyed out) – No chance of gaining a skill up.
It’s also worth pointing out that crafts with three chevrons may also craft more than one item; you can see this by hovering over the chevrons, mainly crafts creating intermediate materials.
Profession Equipment:
To enhance your Cooking abilities, consider crafting or purchasing Profession Equipment. Opt for the highest item level available to maximize your stats and boost your skill in the kitchen.
Tailors and Scribes are responsible for our Tools and Accessories; if you have these professions on a main or alt, you can craft them yourself. Alternatively, visit an Auction House to purchase or create a Work Order for someone else to craft.

Let’s get Cooking!
Before starting, ensure you have equipped your Profession Equipment and Chef’s Hat; these items will increase your Cooking skill, crafting speed, and specific stats: Resourcefulness and Multicraft. Resourcefulness will have a chance to refund cooking reagents when cooking. Multicraft will have an opportunity to cook extra items.
Cooking Skill 1-10:
These early levels will see you concentrating on Prepared Ingredients, which come from four recipes. Ideally, you’ll want to craft the cheapest, but there are benefits in cooking as many of each one as possible!
The four recipes stop giving you skill ups at skill 30 (skill 25 if you have +5 in cooking skill from Profession Equipment)!
Additionally, you can purchase four more recipes (snacks) from the vendor. These similar to Prepared Ingredients will assist in creating other meals in the future. It’s beneficial to craft as many of these as possible.
These four recipes stop giving you skill ups at skill 40 (skill 35 if you have +5 in cooking skill from Profession Equipment)!
Your immediate thought is to craft enough to reach Cooking skill level 10 so you can move on to the next set of recipes. However, the bigger picture is having as many of these Prepared Ingredients/Snacks as possible, as they’ll be an integral reagent in future recipes.
Cooking Skill 10-20:
Six new recipes will become available at Cooking skill level 10, which will help us reach Cooking skill level 20. As with Prepared Ingredients, you will want to craft as many of these due to their requirements in future recipes.
The six recipes.
- Coreway Kabob
- Flash Fire Fillet
- Hallowfall Chili
- Meat and Potatoes
- Pan Seared Mycobloom
- Rib Stickers
You can also purchase and learn Recipe: Azj-Kahet Special at Cooking skill level 15.
Strangely, Meat and Potatoes and Rib Stickers need materials (Marinated Tenderloins and Ginger Glazed Fillet) you can only craft at a later skill level. Which means you’ll have to purchase these materials from the Auction House.
The first four recipes stop giving you skill ups at Cooking skill level 55 (skill 50 if you have +5 in cooking skill from Profession Equipment)!
Cooking Skill 20-35:
Five new recipes become available at Cooking skill level 20
- Fiery Fish Sticks
- Ginger Glazed Fillet
- Sweet and Sour Meatballs
- Tender Twilight Jerky
- Zesty Nibblers
The five recipes stop giving you skill ups at Cooking skill level 70 (skill 65 if you have +5 in cooking skill from Profession Equipment)!
Cooking Skill 35-50:
Another six recipes are available at Cooking skill level 35
- Deepfin Patty
- Salty Dog
- Sweet and Spicy Soup
- The Sushi Special
- Empress’ Farewell (Vendor Recipe)
- Jester’s Board (Vendor Recipe)
If you power-leveled to level 70 (65), The Sushi Special, Empress’ Farewell, and Jester’s Board are the only recipes that will give you skill ups.
Cooking Skill 50-65:
At skill level 50, we get another four recipes.
If you power-leveled to level 70 (65), Sizzling Honey Roast, The Sushi Special, Empress’ Farewell, and Jester’s Board are the only recipes that will give you skill ups.
Cooking Skill 65+
We get four final recipes from the Cooking trainer at Cooking skill level 65.
If you power-leveled to 70 (65), these recipes have two chevrons. Alternatively, to reach Cooking skill level 100, I crafted 26 Sizzling Honey Roast, which gave me enough materials to cook 29 Jester’s Board.
Cooking at max level:
Once you’ve reached Cooking skill level 100, you can freely cook whatever recipes appeal to you or demand the most profit. Be prepared to venture into the wilds, increasing your reputation with Factions in The War Within. Many Factions have recipes available when you reach specific renown.
If you have unlearned recipes and need help finding them, open your Cooking profession window, enable Unlearned, and hover over the information icon. This icon will give a brief explanation as to where and how you can obtain this recipe.
Ultimately, keep your eyes peeled for the class guides section of Wowhead and MethodGG, as they produce excellent class guides that include the best consumables and, importantly, the best food by class.
Add-on CraftSim:
Credit to Blizzard; they did their best to make most crafts in World of Warcraft as trivial and confusing as possible, thanks to the new Profession stats, material combinations, and bonuses. Thankfully for the Gold-Maker, the add-on: CraftSim can calculate the stat weights and average profit to display whether a craft is profitable.
CraftSim can also ensure that the best Profession Equipment is equipped to return the best value, making it effortless to change Tools that improve multiple crafts or resourcefulness.
You can use this with TradeSkillMaster or the default Auction House User Interface to give a price overview highlighting a craft’s profit margins. Before crafting, constantly scan the Auction House with up-to-date material prices (including materials quality). You should use this add-on for all Dragonflight/The War Within Professions!
If you’re not using CraftSim and are interested, check out the add-on here!

TSM Import Strings:
This is a placeholder in preparation for my TSM Import String for Cooking. These will be added once add-ons can be used in the Testing phase or when The War Within releases.
Conclusion:
I can’t wait for The War Within to begin, mainly because cooking is my favorite profession from which I am looking to profit. With Delves, Mythic+, and Raids opening soon, the demand for food will be high!
There’s a lot of testing going on behind the scenes; once class guides become available, check out the best consumables for each class. This will give you an idea of the food in high demand. Check out Wowhead and MethodGG, which regularly post excellent class guides.
